September 29th 2007 - Saris Wetlands Program with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency!

On the morning of September 29th, 2007 a group of about 15 gathered at Saris / Aurora Wetlands off Route 82 for an educational tour of the property brought to you by Moebius Nature Center in partnership with the OEPA.

In the above photo our Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Wetlands expert from the North East District Office uses a specialized tool to extract a small core sample of about 1.5 feet of soil.

With a portion of the sample in hand, Ed uses a Munsel chart to confirm the type of soil and thereby confirm it as a wetland. This is a part of the process the Ohio EPA uses to identify wetland. Other factors such as plants and animals present and also how much of the time an area is under water also are necessary to be identified in order to determine if an area meets the USEPA definition of a wetland.

This is the 2-7 year old class. Lesson learned from last year. Draw a line on the floor the kids cant go past or all 100 will push closer and closer to the dozens of critters and crowed the teacher!

February 17, 2007 Tracks and Scat Hike

Despite deep snow conditions everyone had great time! We saw tons of deer tracks, also squirrel, mouse, and fox.....also heard and saw two barred owls, they were singing their "I am so in love with you" owl song. ;) The snow was so deep in some areas that it was past our knees so all participants got the added benefit of cardio work out also!

Everyone had a good time and we all stopped at the nature center for cookies and hot chocolate afterwards.

On October 14, 2006 Moebius Nature Center along with people at locations around the world participated in World Water Monitoring Day. Sampling was conducted in two locations by Nature Center staff. Sampling were pulled at Moebius Nature Center Creek and also in Lake Erie (1 mile north of the mouth of the Cuyahoga River).

ODNR and World Water Monitoring Day Chagrin River Water Quality Sampling

On the morning of October 8th, 2006 Rob, June, Mathew, John, and Mara collected and analyzed water samples from the Chagrin River in Aurora, Ohio near Rt. 82. Samples for reporting to both the ODNR and World Water Monitoring Day were collected. Ph, Temp, DO, Turbidity, and biology were documented for submittal.

So what is the difference between damselflies and gragonflies? Learn how to identify both an then head out to capture some of the critters . Wearing rubber boots or old shoes is recommended. Things are going to get muddy! See you there.

Ron shows us Jack-in-the-pulpit. The "corm" is the flattened bulb which is poisonous when fresh but edible only when dry. It is also called "Indian Turnip".

Native snakes, salamanders, turtles, toads, frogs, and more. Behavior, habits, and identification were covered then students got to take it into the field for more hands on learning!

The first cue line of the year!

Two Line Salamander Eggs

The fairly fast turtle is called a Spotted Turtle (lemmys guttata)

Studens of all ages are engaged via hands on exposure to native fauna

A fine specimen of the Central Mottled Sculpin (Cottus bairdi)

Some came equipped with their own nets even!

Snake time sssSSsss..... A Black Rat Snake specifically.
Those are this salamanders eggs. Look close and you can see the baby ones in the eggs. The green is a unique form of algae that has a symbiotic relationship with the eggs.
The hard to find Spotted Salamander or Ambystoma maculatum as I like to say.

One of my favorite... crayfish.

A Yellow Bellied Slider ( trachemys scripta) Note the missing front legs.
And finally a Garter Snake ( Thamnophis sirtalis) caught and released out back by some of Moebius's most entrepid explorers!!
